시편 56편은 다윗이 가드에서 블레셋 사람에게 잡혔을 때의 시라는 표제가 붙은 탄원시이다. 원수의 위협 속에서 "하나님을 의지하였은즉 두려워 아니하리니"라는 고백이 후렴처럼 되풀이된다.
