시편 제5권에 속한 7절짜리 짧은 시로, '성전에 올라가는 노래' 15편 가운데 첫 편이다. 거짓된 혀에서 건져 달라고 기도하고, 화평을 미워하는 이들 사이에 사는 괴로움을 탄식한다.

¹In my distress I cried unto the LORD , and he heard me.곤경에 빠져서 야훼께 부르짖었더니 내 소리를 들어주셨사옵니다.

²Deliver my soul, O LORD , from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.야훼여, 나를 건져주소서. 거짓된 입술과 사악한 혀로부터 건져주소서.

³What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?너, 사악한 혀야, 너 무엇을 얻으려 하느냐? 너 무엇을 더 받으려 하느냐?

⁴Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.네가 받을 것은 용사의 날카로운 화살과 노가주나무 숯불뿐이라.

⁵Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!오! 메섹인들에게 얹혀사는 나의 신세, 케달인들 천막에서의 더부살이, 이 괴로움이여.

⁶My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.평화를 지겨워하는 자들, 그들 틈에 너무나도 오래 끼여 살았구나.

⁷I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.내 소망은 화평이다, 한마디만 하여도, 그들에겐 싸움거리가 되는구나.
