시편 127편은 '성전에 올라가는 노래' 가운데 하나로, 표제에 솔로몬의 이름이 붙은 다섯 절짜리 시이다. 집을 세우는 일과 성을 지키는 일, 생계의 수고와 자녀가 모두 여호와께 달려 있다고 노래한다.

¹Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.야훼께서 집을 세우지 아니하시면 집 짓는 자들의 수고가 헛되며 야훼께서 성을 지키지 아니하시면 파수꾼의 깨어 있음이 헛일이다. Notes

²It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.이른 새벽에 일찍 일어나는 것도 밤늦게야 잠자리에 드는 것도, 먹으려고 애쓰는 것도 다 헛되고 헛되니 야훼께서는 사랑하시는 자에게 잘 때에도 배불리신다. Notes

³Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD : and the fruit of the womb is his reward.자식은 야훼의 선물이요, 태중의 소생은 그가 주신 상급이다.

⁴As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.젊어서 낳은 자식은 용사가 손에 든 화살과 같으니,

⁵Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.복되어라, 전동에 그런 화살을 채워 가진 자, 성문에서 원수들과 담판할 때에 높은 데서 이야기하리라.
