시편 137편은 바벨론에 포로로 끌려간 백성이 강변에서 시온을 그리며 슬퍼하고, 예루살렘을 잊지 않겠다고 맹세한 뒤 에돔과 바벨론에 대한 심판을 구하는 9절짜리 탄식시이다.

¹By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.바빌론 기슭, 거기에 앉아 시온을 생각하며 눈물 흘렸다. Notes

²We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.그 언덕 버드나무 가지 위에 우리의 수금 걸어놓고서.

³For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying , Sing us one of the songs of Zion.우리를 잡아온 그 사람들이 그 곳에서 노래하라 청하였지만, 우리를 끌어온 그 사람들이 기뻐하라고 졸라대면서 "한 가락 시온 노래 불러라." 하였지만

⁴How shall we sing the LORD’s song in a strange land?우리 어찌 남의 나라 낯선 땅에서 야훼의 노래를 부르랴!

⁵If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning .예루살렘아, 내가 너를 잊는다면, 내 오른손이 말라버릴 것이다.

⁶If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.네 생각 내 기억에서 잊혀진다면 내 만일 너보다 더 좋아하는 다른 것이 있다면 내 혀가 입천장에 붙을 것이다.

⁷Remember, O LORD , the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it , rase it, even to the foundation thereof.야훼여, 잊지 마소서. 예루살렘이 떨어지던 날, 에돔 사람들이 뇌까리던 말, "쳐부숴라, 바닥이 드러나게 헐어버려라."

⁸O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be , that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.파괴자 바빌론아, 네가 우리에게 입힌 해악을 그대로 갚아주는 사람에게 행운이 있을지라.

⁹Happy shall he be , that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.네 어린것들을 잡아다가 바위에 메어치는 사람에게 행운이 있을지라. Notes
