1A false balance is abomination to the LORD : but a just weight is his delight.야훼께서는 가짜 저울을 역겨워하시고 바른 저울추를 좋아하신다.
2When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.잘난 체하다가는 창피를 당하는 법, 슬기로운 사람은 분수를 차린다.
3The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.정직한 사람은 바르게 살아 앞길이 열리지만 사기꾼은 속임수를 쓰다가 제 꾀에 넘어진다.
4Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.주의 진노가 터지는 날 그 재산은 아무 쓸모가 없지만 착한 행실은 죽을 자리에서 빠져 나오게 해준다.
5The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.흠 없는 사람은 옳게 살아 앞길이 펴지지만 나쁜 사람은 제 잘못으로 거꾸러진다.
6The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.정직한 사람은 의롭게 살아 구원을 받지만 사기꾼은 제 욕심에 얽매인다.
7When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.불의하게 살면 기다리던 것도 죽음과 함께 수포로 돌아간다. 허튼 짓을 하면 바라던 것도 물거품이 된다.
8The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.착하게 살면 곤경에서도 빠져 나오지만 나쁜 일 하다가는 도리어 거기에 빠져든다.
9An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.하느님을 저버린 사람은 혀로 이웃을 죽이지만 착한 사람은 기도로 이웃을 살린다.
10When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.착한 사람이 잘되면 마을이 기뻐하고 나쁜 사람이 망하면 환성이 터진다.
11By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.올바른 사람의 축복은 마을에 번영을 가져오고 나쁜 사람의 말은 마을을 깨뜨린다.
12He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.미련한 사람은 이웃을 모욕하지만 현명한 사람은 입을 다문다.
13A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.입방아를 찧고 다니는 사람은 비밀을 흘리지만 속이 듬직한 사람은 비밀을 지킨다.
14Where no counsel is , the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.지휘자 없는 군대는 패하고 좋은 참모가 많으면 승리한다.
15He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.남의 보증을 서면 고생하지만 보증을 꺼리면 안전하다.
16A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.어진 여인은 칭송을 받지만 바른 일 싫어하는 여인은 금방석에 앉아 욕을 먹는다. 게으른 사람은 떡그릇 옆에서 굶어 죽지만 부지런한 사람은 부자 되게 마련이다.
17The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.남 사랑하면 제가 사랑받고 남 잡으면 제가 잡힌다.
18The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.악인에게 돌아오는 삯은 헛것이지만 정의를 심는 사람에게는 어김없이 상이 돌아온다.
19As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.정의를 굳게 지키면 생명에 이르지만 악한 일을 좇으면 죽음을 불러들인다.
20They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD : but such as are upright in their way are his delight.마음이 비뚤어진 사람은 야훼께 미움을 사지만 정직하게 사는 사람은 그를 기쁘게 해드린다.
21Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.악한 일 하고 죄 안 받는 법 없고 착하게 살고 후손이 망하는 법 없다.
22As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.예쁜 여자가 단정하지 못한 것은 돼지 코에 금고리다.
23The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.착한 사람의 소원은 이루어지지만 나쁜 사람의 바람은 수포로 돌아간다.
24There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.인심이 후하면 더욱 부자가 되지만 인색하게 굴면 오히려 궁해진다.Notes
25The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.남에게 은덕을 베풀어야 풍부해지고 남을 대접해야 저도 대접을 받는다.
26He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it .곡식을 내놓지 않으면 욕을 먹고 곡식을 팔아주면 복이 굴러든다.Notes
27He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.좋은 일을 애써 찾으면 호감을 사지만 나쁜 일을 좇으면 그것을 되받는다.
28He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.돈이 많다고 우쭐대다가는 쓰러지지만 착하게 살면 나뭇잎처럼 피어난다.
29He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.제 집 돌보지 않으면 바람만 맞고 어리석은 사람은 슬기로운 사람의 종이 된다.
30The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.착한 사람은 생명나무 열매를 맺지만 남 괴롭히는 사람은 생명을 잃는다.
31Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.착하게 살면 땅 위에서 상급을 받지만 나쁜 일, 못할 일 하면 벌을 면할 길이 없다.
