시편 142편은 표제에 '다윗이 굴에 있을 때'의 기도로 소개된 개인 탄원시이다. 기도자는 아무도 돌보지 않는 고립 속에서 여호와만이 피난처이자 분깃이라고 고백하며 건져 주기를 간구한다.

1I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication.내 목소리로 여호와께 나 부르짖네.내 목소리로 여호와께 불쌍히 여겨 달라고 비네.
2I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble.나 쏟아 놓네, 여호와 앞에 내 탄식을. 내 괴로움을 여호와 앞에 알려 드리네.
3When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.나에게서 내 숨결이 약해졌을 때, 주님이 친히 내 길을 알아주십니다. 내가 다니는 길에, 사람들이 올가미를 놓았습니다, 나를 잡으려고.
4I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.오른쪽을 살펴보십시오. 나를 알아보는 자가 없습니다. 나에게서 도피처가 없어졌습니다. 이 몸을 돌봐 주는 사람이 없습니다.
5I cried unto thee, O LORD : I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.나 부르짖습니다, 주님께, 오, 여호와여, 나 아뢰었습니다. “주님은 나의 대피소, 살아 있는 사람들의 땅에서 내가 차지할 몫이십니다.”
6Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.나의 탄원을 주의 깊게 들어 주십시오. 나는 아주 하찮아졌으니까요. 나를 뒤쫓는 사람들에게서 나를 구해 주십시오. 그들은 나보다 더 강하니까요.
7Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.감옥에서 이 몸을 꺼내 주십시오, 주님의 이름을 찬양하도록. 의인들이 내 둘레에 모여들 것입니다. 주님이 나를 보살펴 주시니까요.
