1Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,여호와의 말씀이 아밋대의 아들 요나에게 내려오는 일이 일어났다.
2Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.“일어나 가라, 니네베 그 큰 도시로! 그 도시에 맞서 널리 알려라. 그들의 악함이 치솟아 나의 앞에 다다라 있기 때문이다.”
3But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD , and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD .그러나 요나는 다르시스로 달아나려고 일어났다. 여호와 앞을 떠나려 한 것이다. 욥바로 내려가서, 다르시스로 가는 배와 맞닥뜨렸다. 그래서 뱃삯을 내고, 그들과 함께 다르시스로 가려고 배 안으로 내려갔다. 여호와 앞을 떠나려 한 것이다.
4But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.그러나 여호와께서 큰 바람을 바다로 내던지셨고, 큰 폭풍이 바다에 일었다. 배가 부서질 판국이었다.
5Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.뱃사람들은 두려움에 떨면서 저마다 섬기는 신들에게 도와 달라고 외쳤다. 배에 실어 둔 화물을 바다로 내던졌다. 그만큼이라도 가볍게 하려 한 것이다. 그때 요나는 배의 맨 밑바닥 구석에 내려가 있었다. 누워서 잠에 곯아떨어져 있었다.
6So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.그에게 선장이 다가와 말했다. “어쩌자고 손님은 잠에 곯아떨어져 있는 것이오? 일어나시오. 손님이 섬기는 신을 소리쳐 불러 보시오. 어쩌면 그 신이 우리를 생각해 주실 것이오. 그러면 우리가 목숨을 잃지 않을 것이오.”
7And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.사람들은 서로 이런 말을 주고받았다. “자, 제비를 뽑아 알아봅시다, 누구 때문에 이런 불행한 일이 우리에게 닥쳤는지!” 그러고는 제비를 뽑았는데 요나가 뽑혔다.
8Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?그들이 요나에게 말했다. “우리한테 말 좀 해 보시오. 누구 때문에 이런 불행한 일이 우리에게 닥친 것이오? 그대 하는 일이 무엇이오? 어디서 온 것이오? 어느 땅 사람이오? 어느 나라 백성이오, 그대는?”
9And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD , the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land . : or, JEHOVAH요나가 그들에게 대답했다. “나는 히브리 사람이오. 여호와 하늘의 하나님을 두려워한다오. 그 하나님이 바다와 마른땅을 만드셨소.”
10Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD , because he had told them.그 사람들이 두려워하고 크게 두려워하여 요나에게 말했다. “어쩌자고 그런 일을 저지른 것이오?” 여호와 앞을 떠나 요나가 달아나고 있다는 것을 그 사람들이 알게 되었던 것이다. 요나가 그들에게 이야기해 주었기 때문이다.
11Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.그들이 그에게 물었다. “우리가 그대를 어떻게 해야 바다가 고요해져서 우리를 덮치지 않겠소?” 바다가 점점 더 사나워지고 있었던 것이다.
12And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.그가 그들에게 대답했다. “나를 들어 올려 바다로 내던지시오. 그러면 바다가 고요해져서 여러분을 덮치지 않을 것이오. 나는 알고 있소, 나 때문에 이 큰 폭풍이 여러분에게 닥쳤다는 것을!”
13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.사람들은 노를 저어 뚫고 나가려고 했다. 방향을 돌려 마른땅으로 가려 했던 것이다. 그렇지만 그렇게 할 수 없었다. 바다가 점점 더 사나워져서 그들을 덮치고 있었기 때문이다.
14Wherefore they cried unto the LORD , and said, We beseech thee, O LORD , we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD , hast done as it pleased thee.그래서 그들이 여호와를 소리쳐 부르며 말했다. “여호와여, 부디 이 사람의 목숨 때문에 우리가 목숨을 잃는 일은 없게 해 주십시오. 죄 없는 사람의 피를 쏟은 책임을 우리에게 지우지 마십시오. 주님은, 여호와여, 주님 마음에 드는 대로 하시기 때문입니다.”
15So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.그들이 요나를 들어 올려 바다로 내던졌다. 그러자 바다가 매우 거칠게 일렁이다가 잠잠해졌다.
16Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD , and made vows. , and vowed vows그 사람들이 여호와를 두려워하고 크게 두려워했다. 그들은 여호와께 희생제물을 바쳤다. 나중에 따로 제물을 바치기로 단단히 약속하기도 했다.
17Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.여호와는 큰 물고기를 보내 주셔서 요나를 삼키게 하셨다. 요나는 물고기 뱃속에서 3일 밤낮을 지냈다.
