시편 4편은 다윗의 시로 표제가 붙은 8절짜리 기도시이다. 곤경 속에서 하나님께 응답을 구하고, 헛된 것을 좇는 사람들을 타이른 뒤, 여호와 안에서 평안히 잠드는 신뢰로 끝난다.

1Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.의로우신 나의 하나님, 내가 부르짖을 때에 응답하여 주십시오. 내가 곤궁에 빠졌을 때에, 나를 막다른 길목에서 벗어나게 해주십시오. 나에게 은혜를 베푸시고, 나의 기도를 들어 주십시오.
2O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.너희 높은 자들아, 언제까지 내 영광을 욕되게 하려느냐? 언제까지 헛된 일을 좋아하며, 거짓 신을 섬기겠느냐? (셀라)
3But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.주님께서는 주님께 헌신하는 사람을 각별히 돌보심을 기억하여라. 주님께서는 내가 부르짖을 때에 들어 주신다.
4Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.너희는 분노하여도 죄짓지 말아라. 잠자리에 누워 마음 깊이 반성하면서, 눈물을 흘려라. (셀라)
5Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD .올바른 제사를 드리고, 주님을 의지하여라.
6There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD , lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.“주님, 우리에게 큰 복을 내려 주십시오.” “누가 우리에게 좋은 일을 보여줄 수 있을까?” 하며 불평하는 사람이 많이 있습니다. 그러나 주님, 주님의 환한 얼굴을 우리에게 비춰 주십시오.
7Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.주님께서 내 마음에 안겨 주신 기쁨은 햇 곡식과 새 포도주가 풍성할 때에 누리는 기쁨보다 더 큽니다.
8I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD , only makest me dwell in safety.내가 편히 눕거나 잠드는 것도, 주님께서 나를 평안히 쉬게 하여 주시기 때문입니다.
