시편 제5권에 속한 7절짜리 짧은 시로, '성전에 올라가는 노래' 15편 가운데 첫 편이다. 거짓된 혀에서 건져 달라고 기도하고, 화평을 미워하는 이들 사이에 사는 괴로움을 탄식한다.

¹In my distress I cried unto the LORD , and he heard me.내가 고난을 받을 때에 주님께 부르짖었더니, 주께서 나에게 응답하여 주셨다.

²Deliver my soul, O LORD , from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.주님, 사기꾼들과 기만자들에게서 내 생명을 구하여 주십시오.

³What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?너희, 사기꾼들아, 하나님이 너희에게 어떻게 하시겠느냐? 주님이 너희를 어떻게 벌하시겠느냐?

⁴Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.용사의 날카로운 화살과 싸리나무 숯불로 벌하실 것이다!

⁵Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!괴롭구나! 너희와 함께 사는 것이 메섹 사람의 손에서 나그네로 사는 것이나 다름없구나. 게달 사람의 천막에서 더부살이하는 것이나 다름없구나.

⁶My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.내가 지금까지 너무나도 오랫동안, 평화를 싫어하는 사람들과 더불어 살아왔구나.

⁷I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.나는 평화를 사랑하는 사람이다. 그러나 내가 평화를 말할 때에, 그들은 전쟁을 생각한다.
