여호수아 23장은 늙은 여호수아가 이스라엘의 지도자들을 불러 모아 남긴 고별 권면이다. 여호와께서 이스라엘을 위해 싸우셨음을 돌아보고, 율법을 지키고 남은 민족의 신들을 섬기지 말라고 당부한다.

1And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age.주께서 주변의 모든 원수를 멸하시어 이스라엘에게 안식을 주신 뒤에, 오랜 세월이 흘러 여호수아도 나이가 많이 들었고 늙었다.
2And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age:여호수아는 온 이스라엘, 곧 장로들과 우두머리들과 재판장들과 관리들을 불러서, 그들에게 말하였다. "나는 나이가 많이 들었고, 이렇게 늙었소.
3And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you.여러분은 주 여러분의 하나님이 여러분의 편이 되시어, 이 모든 이방 나라에게 어떻게 하셨는지, 그 모든 일을 잘 보셨소. 과연 주 여러분의 하나님은 여러분의 편이 되시어 싸우셨소.
4Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.보시오. 요단 강으로부터 해 지는 지중해까지, 아직 남아 있는 모든 나라와 이미 정복한 모든 나라를, 나는 여러분들의 각 지파에게 유산으로 나누어 주었소.
5And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you.주 여러분의 하나님이 친히 여러분 앞에서 그들까지 마저 쫓아내실 것이오. 주께서, 여러분이 보는 앞에서 그들을 몰아내실 터인데, 그 때에 여러분은, 주 하나님이 약속하신 그 땅을 소유하게 될 것이오.
6Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;그러므로 모세의 율법책에 기록된 모든 것을 아주 담대하게 지키고 행하시오. 그것을 벗어나 좌로나 우로나 치우치지 마시오.
7That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them , neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:여러분과 이웃한, 남아 있는 이 나라들과 사귀지 말며, 그 신들의 이름을 부르거나, 그 이름으로 맹세하지도 마시오. 그것을 섬기거나 경배하지도 마시오.
8But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.오직 여러분은, 지금까지 해 온 대로, 주 여러분의 하나님만 가까이하시오.
9For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day. …: or, Then the LORD will drive주께서 여러분 앞에서 크고 강한 나라들을 몰아내셨으므로, 지금까지 여러분을 당할 사람이 없었던 것이오.
10One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.주 여러분의 하나님이 약속하신 대로 여러분의 편을 들어서 몸소 싸우셨기 때문에, 여러분 가운데서 한 사람이 원수 천 명을 추격할 수 있었던 것이오.
11Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.그러므로 삼가 조심하여 주 여러분의 하나님을 사랑하시오.
12Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:만일 여러분이 이것을 어기고, 여러분 가운데 살아 남아 있는 이 이방 민족들을 가까이하거나, 그들과 혼인관계를 맺으며 사귀면,
13Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.주 여러분의 하나님이 여러분 앞에서, 다시는 이 민족들을 몰아내지 아니하실 것이라는 사실을 분명히 아시오. 그들이 여러분에게 올무와 덫이 되고, 잔등에 채찍이 되며, 눈에 가시가 되어, 끝내 여러분은 주 여러분의 하나님이 주신 이 좋은 땅에서 멸망하게 될 것이오.
14And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.나는 이제 온 세상 사람이 가는 길로 갈 때가 되었소. 여러분은 주 하나님이 약속하신 모든 선한 말씀 가운데서 이루어지지 않은 것이 하나도 없음을, 여러분 모두의 마음과 모두의 양심 속에 분명히 알고 있소. 그 가운데서 한 말씀도 어김이 없이 다 이루어졌소.
15Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.주 하나님이 약속하신 모든 선한 말씀을 여러분에게 그대로 이루셨지만, 그 반대로 주께서는 모든 해로운 일도 여러분에게 미치게 하여, 주 하나님이 여러분에게 주신 이 좋은 땅에서 여러분을 없애 버리실 수도 있음을 명심하시오.
16When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.그러므로 여러분이, 주 하나님이 여러분에게 지키라고 명하신 언약을 어기고, 가서 다른 신을 섬기고 경배하면, 주의 진노가 여러분에게 내려, 여러분은, 그가 주신 좋은 땅에서 곧 망하게 될 것이오."
