The Five Visions of Amos
[Bible]The Five Visions of Amos is the collective name for five scenes that God showed the prophet Amos, recorded in Amos 7:1–9:4 in the Old Testament: the locusts, the fire, the plumb line, the basket of summer fruit, and the Lord standing beside the altar.
Plumb Line
[Bible]A plumb line is a cord with a weight attached, used to check whether a wall stands straight. Because it appears in Amos 7, in a vision of God measuring Israel for judgment, it came to signify God's standard and His judgment.
Amos 7
[Bible]Amos 7 contains three of Amos's visions (locusts, fire, and a plumb line), along with the account of Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, who tries to silence Amos's prophecy and in turn receives a word of judgment.
Amaziah (Priest of Bethel)
[People]Amaziah was the priest of the sanctuary at Bethel in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II. In Amos 7 he accuses the prophet Amos before the king and tries to drive him out of Bethel, and in turn he receives a word of judgment.
Amos 8
[Bible]Amos 8 announces the "end" of the northern kingdom of Israel through the vision of a basket of summer fruit, indicts those who cheat the poor, and foretells a day of judgment when the sun goes down at noon, along with a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.
