Chenaniah was a chief of the Levites who directed and taught the singing when David brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. He appears in 1 Chronicles 15.
Biblical Record
Chenaniah is a Levite who appears only in 1 Chronicles. When David moved the Ark of the Covenant from the house of Obed-edom to Jerusalem, he commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint singers (1 Chronicles 15:16). Here Chenaniah is introduced as "chief of the Levites," and the text says that he "was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful" (1 Chronicles 15:22, KJV).
He appears again in the passage describing the procession that carried the ark up to Jerusalem, where he is called "the master of the song with the singers." Along with David, the Levites who bore the ark, and the singers, he was clothed in a robe of fine linen (1 Chronicles 15:27). The parallel account of the same event in 2 Samuel 6 does not mention Chenaniah.
The name Chenaniah also occurs in 1 Chronicles 26:29, which records that among the Izharites, "Chenaniah and his sons were for the outward business over Israel, for officers and judges." Izhar was a descendant of Kohath, the son of Levi. The "outward business" here is understood to refer not to duties inside the temple but to administrative and judicial affairs outside it.
Significance Within Scripture
Chronicles tends to record in detail the worship duties assigned to the Levites. The account of Chenaniah is likewise read as evidence that worship music in David's time was organized and carried out under designated leaders. Chenaniah is not mentioned in the New Testament.
Interpretation and Points of Discussion
- "Song" or "carrying"? The Hebrew word massa, rendered "song" in 1 Chronicles 15:22, is related to the ideas of "lifting up" and "burden." It can also denote raising the voice. The Korean Revised Version understood it as referring to singing. Some scholars, however, hold that Chenaniah oversaw the transport of the Ark of the Covenant rather than the singing.
- Is he the same person as the Chenaniah of 1 Chronicles 26:29? Chapter 15 does not identify Chenaniah's family line. Consequently, some regard the Chenaniah of the two passages as the same person, while others regard them as different individuals.
- Distinguishing later embellishments: The text says almost nothing about Chenaniah's character or life. Expressions such as "the first choir director" are interpretive applications of the text, not titles the Bible itself gives him.
In the Korean Church
In the Korean church, Chenaniah is sometimes cited in sermons for choir dedication services or in sermons on the role of worship leaders and conductors. Such sermons typically point to the phrase "because he was skilful" to emphasize the preparation and expertise required of those responsible for worship music.
