Molid

People · Bible people · Also called: Molid son of Abishur

Molid is a figure in the genealogy of the tribe of Judah in 1 Chronicles 2. He was the son of Abishur, a descendant of Jerahmeel, and Abishur's wife Abihail, and the brother of Ahban.

Biblical Record

Molid appears only once, in the genealogy (a record of family lineage) of the descendants of Judah in 1 Chronicles 2. His name is rendered the same way in the Korean Revised Version and the New Korean Revised Version, and this single verse is the only place in the entire Bible where the name occurs.

  • 1 Chronicles 2:29: "And the name of the wife of Abishur was Abihail, and she bare him Ahban, and Molid."

Traced through the surrounding verses, the line runs Judah → Pharez → Hezron → Jerahmeel → Onam → Shammai → Abishur → Molid (1 Chronicles 2:5, 2:9, 2:25–29). Molid is the brother of Ahban. The text records nothing about his life, deeds, or children. With the very next verse (1 Chronicles 2:30), the genealogy turns to the descendants of Nadab, Abishur's brother.

Significance Within Scripture

Molid is not a character in a narrative but a figure whose name survives only in a genealogy. The genealogies of 1 Chronicles 1–9 are understood as records compiled so that the Israelite community that returned from the Babylonian exile could confirm its roots and the continuity of its tribes. Within these genealogies, Molid is recorded as part of one branch of the house of Jerahmeel in the tribe of Judah.

Molid does not appear in the New Testament. The genealogies of Jesus in Matthew 1 and Luke 3 follow the line of Ram, Jerahmeel's brother, so Molid is not directly connected to them.

Interpretation and Debate

Because the text gives only his name and family relationships, there are no interpretive differences among denominations regarding him. Some attempt to explain the meaning of his name from its Hebrew root, but no explanation is definitive. Any account that describes his era or life in specific detail goes beyond what the text contains.

In the Korean Church

No widely known sermons or Sunday school materials focus specifically on Molid. His name is mainly encountered in passing when the genealogies of 1 Chronicles are read as part of reading through the Bible.
