1 Samuel 4

Bible · Chapter overviews · Also called: 1 Sam 4, 1 Sam. 4, 1 Samuel chapter 4, I Samuel 4, First Samuel 4

1 Samuel 4 is the chapter in which Israel suffers a heavy defeat at the hands of the Philistines at the battle of Aphek and loses the ark of the covenant. Eli and his two sons die, and the wife of Phinehas gives birth to a son and declares, "The glory is departed from Israel."

In 1 Samuel 3, Samuel is established as a prophet, and the judgment that will fall on the house of Eli is announced. Chapter 4 recounts the fulfillment of that judgment and forms the first part of the ark narrative, which runs from chapter 4 through chapter 7.

Outline

  • Verses 1–2 Israel encamps beside Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamp at Aphek. In the first battle about four thousand Israelite soldiers are killed.
  • Verses 3–9 At the elders' suggestion, the ark of the covenant is brought from Shiloh to the camp. Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, accompany the ark. When Israel raises a great shout, the Philistines are afraid, but they urge one another to take courage.
  • Verses 10–11 Israel is soundly defeated, and thirty thousand foot soldiers fall. The ark of God is captured, and Hophni and Phinehas are killed.
  • Verses 12–18 A Benjaminite runs to Shiloh with the news. Eli, who is ninety-eight years old, hears that the ark has been taken, falls backward from his seat, breaks his neck, and dies. The text records that he judged Israel for forty years.
  • Verses 19–22 When the wife of Phinehas hears the news, she suddenly goes into labor, gives birth, and lies dying. She names the child Ichabod and says, "The glory is departed from Israel."

Key Verses

  • 1 Samuel 4:3 "Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that … it may save us" — This verse reveals an attitude that treated the ark as an instrument guaranteeing victory.
  • 1 Samuel 4:18 This verse records Eli's death. The prophecies concerning Eli's house (1 Samuel 2:27–36; 3:11–14) are fulfilled in this chapter.
  • 1 Samuel 4:21 "The glory is departed from Israel" — This verse explains the meaning of the name Ichabod and sums up the chapter as a whole.

Characters and Places

  • Eli: Priest at Shiloh and judge of Israel.
  • Hophni and Phinehas: Eli's two sons, both priests. This Phinehas is not the same person as Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron.
  • Ichabod: Son of Phinehas. His name is understood to mean "no glory."
  • Aphek: The place where the Philistines encamped.
  • Shiloh: The place where the ark of the covenant was kept.
  • Hebrews: The name by which the Philistines referred to the Israelites.

Points for Reflection

  • Many interpreters read Israel's defeat, despite the presence of the ark in the camp, as a rebuke of a faith that sought to lay hold of God's presence through an object.
  • The name "Ebenezer" is first given in 1 Samuel 7:12. For this reason, many scholars hold that its use in 4:1 identifies the site by its later name.
  • The Septuagint reportedly gives the length of Eli's judgeship as twenty years.
  • The Philistines refer to the God of Israel in the plural, as "gods," and recall the ten plagues (4:8). This detail reflects the outlook of polytheistic Gentiles.
  • In the New Testament, Hebrews 9:4–5 mentions the ark of the covenant and the objects it contained.

In the Korean Church

The name "Ichabod" and the phrase "The glory is departed" are frequently cited in sermons, where they serve as warnings against spiritual decline or a faith that retains only outward form.
