Zeruiah was the daughter of Jesse, the sister of David, and the mother of Joab, the commander of David's army, and of the warriors Abishai and Asahel. She appears in Scripture chiefly through the expression "the son(s) of Zeruiah."
Biblical Record
Zeruiah is named among the children of Jesse in 1 Chronicles 2:16. After listing David's brothers, the verse states, "Whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail," and names three sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. Zeruiah was therefore the sister of David, and her sons were David's nephews.
Scripture records nothing of Zeruiah's own actions. Instead, her sons are repeatedly called "the son(s) of Zeruiah." 1 Samuel 26:6 mentions "Abishai the son of Zeruiah," and 2 Samuel 2:18 names "three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel." Her husband's name is not given, although 2 Samuel 2:32 records that Asahel was buried "in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Bethlehem."
Significance Within Scripture
The expression "son(s) of Zeruiah" carries particular weight in David's own words. After Joab killed Abner, David lamented, "these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me" (2 Samuel 3:39). When Abishai offered to kill Shimei, who had cursed David, David restrained him, saying, "What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah?" (2 Samuel 16:10; 19:22). In these scenes the sons of Zeruiah are portrayed as kinsmen who were loyal to David yet rough and difficult to control. Zeruiah is not mentioned in the New Testament.
Interpretations and Issues
- Why the sons are named after their mother: In the Old Testament a person is ordinarily identified by the father's name, so several explanations have been offered for this usage. Proposals include that the father died early, that the phrase was meant to highlight the sons' blood relationship to David through his sister, and that Zeruiah was a prominent figure within the family. The text itself confirms none of these.
- Relationship to Jesse: 2 Samuel 17:25 describes Zeruiah's sister Abigail as "the daughter of Nahash." Interpretations therefore differ: some regard Zeruiah as David's half-sister, sharing the same mother but not the same father; others take Nahash as another name for Jesse; still others attribute the discrepancy to differences in textual transmission. There is no consensus.
- This Abigail is a different person from Abigail, the wife of Nabal who later became David's wife. The two are often confused.
- Details not found in the text, such as Zeruiah's age or character, should be clearly identified as conjecture.
In the Korean Church
Zeruiah is rarely treated as a sermon topic in her own right. The expression "the sons of Zeruiah" is more often introduced in sermons and Bible studies on the relationship between David and Joab or on the Shimei episode. It is sometimes cited to show that even David's own kin were difficult to govern.
