1 Chronicles 23

Bible · Chapter overviews · Also called: 1 Chr 23, 1 Chron. 23, First Chronicles 23, I Chronicles 23

1 Chronicles 23 records how the aged David made Solomon king and numbered the Levites for service in the temple, dividing them into courses by the families of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari and assigning their duties.

Chapters 23 through 27 of 1 Chronicles describe David's organization of the temple service, and this chapter opens that section. In the preceding chapter, 1 Chronicles 22, David gathered materials for building the temple and charged Solomon with its construction.

Outline

  • Verses 1–2: David, now old, makes Solomon king over Israel. He gathers the princes (leaders), the priests, and the Levites.
  • Verses 3–5: The Levites aged thirty and upward are numbered at 38,000. Of these, 24,000 are appointed to oversee the work of the house of the LORD, 6,000 to serve as officers and judges, 4,000 as gatekeepers, and 4,000 to praise the LORD with instruments.
  • Verses 6–11: The heads of the families of the sons of Gershon.
  • Verses 12–20: The heads of the families of the sons of Kohath. The sons of Aaron were set apart for holy service, while the sons of Moses were reckoned among the tribe of Levi.
  • Verses 21–23: The heads of the families of the sons of Merari.
  • Verses 24–32: The Levites are numbered again from twenty years old and upward, and their duties are defined: assisting the sons of Aaron, purifying the holy things, taking charge of the showbread and the meat offering, offering praise morning and evening, and attending to the burnt offerings at the appointed feasts.

Key Verses

  • 1 Chronicles 23:1 "So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel." This verse marks the royal succession and the beginning of the temple era.
  • 1 Chronicles 23:26 "And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof." With the transition from the era of the movable tabernacle to that of the fixed Temple in Jerusalem, the role of the Levites changes.
  • 1 Chronicles 23:30 "And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even." This verse shows that praise had become a regular duty.

People and Places

  • David, Solomon
  • Aaron: The elder brother of Moses; his descendants carry out the priestly duties.
  • Moses: His sons Gershom and Eliezer are recorded among the Levites.
  • Gershon, Kohath, and Merari: The three sons of Levi, whose lines form the basis for dividing the Levitical families.
  • Jerusalem: The place where God is said to dwell forever (v. 25).

Points for Reflection

Verse 3 states that the Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward, while verses 24 and 27 state that they were numbered from twenty years old and upward. Numbers likewise gives differing ages for Levitical service: thirty (Numbers 4) and twenty-five (Numbers 8). Some interpreters, citing the phrase "by the last words of David" in verse 27, hold that David later lowered the age requirement; other scholars attribute the difference to variations in the manuscript tradition. The Eleazar mentioned in verse 22 is a descendant of Merari and is a different person from Eleazar the son of Aaron.
