1 Chronicles 24 records how David divided the priests descended from Aaron by lot into twenty-four courses (divisions that served in rotation) and also assigned the remaining Levite families by lot.
This chapter belongs to the latter part of 1 Chronicles, in which David organizes the service of the temple. Following 1 Chronicles 23, which divides the Levites by the families of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, this chapter establishes the priestly courses.
Outline
- Verses 1–2 The sons of Aaron are Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Because Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no sons, Eleazar and Ithamar carry out the priestly office.
- Verses 3–6 David, together with Zadok and Ahimelech, divides the priests. There are sixteen chief men among the descendants of Eleazar and eight among the descendants of Ithamar, and they are divided by lot without distinction. Shemaiah the scribe records the names.
- Verses 7–19 The order of the twenty-four courses is listed, from Jehoiarib, the first, to Maaziah, the twenty-fourth. The eighth is Abijah.
- Verses 20–30 The heads of the remaining Levite families are listed, belonging to the lines of Amram, Izhar, Hebron, Uzziel, and Merari.
- Verse 31 These also cast lots just as the descendants of Aaron did, and no distinction was made between the family of the eldest brother and that of the younger.
Key Verses
- 1 Chronicles 24:5 "Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another": This shows that duties were assigned by lot rather than by the relative standing of the families.
- 1 Chronicles 24:10 "The eighth to Abijah": In the New Testament this is the name of the course to which Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, belonged.
People and Places
- Aaron: The ancestor of the priestly family.
- Eleazar: The third son of Aaron. The Eleazar in verse 28 is a different man, the son of Mahli.
- Ithamar: The fourth son of Aaron.
- Nadab and Abihu: The first and second sons of Aaron. Their deaths are recorded in Leviticus 10.
- David: Oversees the organization of the courses.
- Zadok: A priest of the line of Eleazar.
- Ahimelech: A priest of the line of Ithamar and the son of Abiathar.
- Shemaiah: The Levite scribe who recorded the names.
Points for Reflection
- Verse 3 introduces Ahimelech as one "of the sons of Ithamar," while verse 6 calls him "the son of Abiathar."
- The system of courses is understood to have become the framework for later temple service. Luke 1:5, 8–9 relates that Zacharias, a priest "of the course of Abia," was chosen by lot to burn incense (Zacharias and Elisabeth).
- Some interpreters connect the twenty-four elders of Revelation 4 with the twenty-four courses. This is an interpretation, not something the text states directly.
