Erdmuthe Dorothea von Reuss (1700–1756) was a German countess and hymnwriter of the Pietist era. The first wife of Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf, she managed the household affairs and finances of the Herrnhut community, thereby supporting the Moravian Church.
Life
Erdmuthe Dorothea was born on November 7, 1700, in Ebersdorf, which today lies in the German state of Thuringia. Her maiden name was Reuss (Reuß). Her father was Heinrich X, Count of Reuss-Ebersdorf (1662–1711). The comital house of Reuss-Ebersdorf is known to have been closely associated with Pietism, a religious movement within seventeenth- and eighteenth-century German Lutheranism that emphasized personal conversion and a life of piety.
In 1722 she married Nicolaus von Zinzendorf and was thereafter known as Countess Zinzendorf; for this reason she is also known as Erdmuthe Dorothea von Zinzendorf. The couple had a number of children, many of whom are reported to have died young. She died in Herrnhut on June 19, 1756, and was buried in the Herrnhut cemetery, known as God's Acre (Gottesacker). The following year Zinzendorf married Anna Nitschmann.
Ministry and Contributions
Around the time of Zinzendorf's marriage, Protestant refugees fleeing persecution in Moravia (in what is now the eastern Czech Republic) began settling on his estate. The village that grew up there was Herrnhut, and this community became the center of the renewed Moravian Church. Zinzendorf was frequently away from his estate for preaching, travel, and the support of foreign missions, and around 1736 he was banished from Saxony. During these periods Erdmuthe Dorothea is reported to have managed the household affairs and finances of both the estate and the community. She is credited with enabling the Moravians' communal life and missionary work to remain economically viable.
She is also remembered as a writer of church hymns and is described as a German Pietist and hymnwriter.
Influence on the Korean Church
No direct influence of Erdmuthe Dorothea on the church in Korea has been documented. However, the Moravian Church that she supported is widely recognized as having influenced the Methodist movement, notably through the religious experience of John Wesley. For this reason, the Moravians are sometimes mentioned in church history instruction dealing with the Methodist and Holiness traditions in Korea.
Assessment
In church history she is usually overshadowed by Zinzendorf and receives only brief mention. Nevertheless, she has been reappraised as the person who sustained Herrnhut by overseeing its practical affairs and finances in a community whose leader was often absent. Few Korean-language sources, however, describe her personal religious activities or the specific roles she held within the community, so the details require further verification.
